What follows describes the problem, the approach and the engineering decisions at a level that discloses no proprietary detail.
An enterprise resource planning system built for Al Barkat Oriental Carpets, a carpet retailer operating branches across Indonesia, selling handmade and machine-made carpets alongside repair and cleaning services.
The domain
Carpet retail is an awkward fit for off-the-shelf retail software. A hand-knotted rug is not a SKU with a quantity: each piece is individually distinguishable by origin, material, size and condition, so stock has to be tracked as identified items rather than counted units. Add branches in different cities and a service arm running alongside the sales floor, and the shape of the data stops matching what a generic point-of-sale tool expects.
Scope
- Inventory: stock tracked per branch, for goods that are individually distinguishable rather than interchangeable.
- Sales: recording transactions through to reporting.
- Multi-branch: operations spread across locations, kept visible centrally.
- Built and handed over solo: requirements, data model, interface, deployment and support.
Built as a freelance engagement. The system is used internally by the business, so there is no public link.
